'Smuggler' killed in Chitwan National Park

CHITWAN, Nov 28: A person who was allegedly trying to smuggle timber was killed in Nepal Army´s action inside the Chitwan National Park on Friday. Two others were arrested in the incident while three managed to flee.



Raj Kumar Darai of Kumroj-8 of Chitwan died after the army personnel took action when the former was allegedly attempted to attack a patrolling team of the army inside the park.



Those arrested are Buddhi Darai and Ram Nande Darai of Kumroj-9, informed Park´s Chief Conservation Officer Narendra Man Babu Pradhan.

 

Assistant Conservation Officer Lal Bahadur Bhandari said army personnel have seized the foodstuffs and clothes used by the ´smugglers´.



The patrolling team of the army was under the command of Second Lieutenant Laxman Karki.



District Police Office, Chitwan, said Raj Kumar´s body has been is kept in Bharatpur Hospital for post-mortem.



Meanwhile, the residents of Kumroj VDC have claimed that Darai was no smuggler but a commoner who had entered the park to collect firewood. President of a local consumers´ committee, Kul Prasad Bhusal, said the army shot at them even without giving a warning.



"It is a violation of law. They could have easily arrested the unarmed persons if needed," Bhusal said, adding that the park management also delayed to disclose the incident. Locals have demanded a probe into the case.
