Shrestha, Tamang through; Tamrakar out

KATHMANDU, Jan 12: Top-seeded Bikash Shrestha and Ratnajit Tamang marched into the men´s singles quarterfinals while Sajan Krishna Tamrakar suffered a shock defeat on Wednesday in the Seventh Nationwide Krishna Mohan Memorial Open Badminton Tournament underway at the Armed Police Force (APF) headquarters Halchowk, Kathmandu.



Shrestha of Nepal Police Club (NPC) romped home to an easy 21-15, 21-7 victory over Rajan Shiwakoti of the hosts APF, while Tamang of APF eased past Basanta Bajracharya of Palpa 21-14, 21-13.[break]



On the other hand, APF´s Tamrakar, one of the title contenders, was humiliated by former national champion Pashupati Paneru of Kailali 21-8, 21-8, for a place in the quarterfinal.



Similarly, Bishal Pradhan of APF had a hard-fought 21-19, 19-21, 21-17 win over his colleague Dipesh Thapa. Bivek Shrestha of NPC thumped Sanjeev Khadka of Kailali 21-19, 21-12, Ram Singh Chaudhary of Kailali beat Bishnu Katuwal of NPC 17-21, 21-19, 21-19, Indra Mehata of the hosts saw off Surbir Sthapit of Nawalparasi 21-7, 21-9 and Sahadev Khadka of Kathmandu beat Bilal Warsi of Kathmandu 21-11, 18-21, 22-20 for a place in the last eight.



Despite losing in the men´s singles, Dhami of APF booked a berth in men´s U-17 semifinal with defeating Santosh Khadka of Adarsh School 21-13, 21-14. Similarly, Suman Limbu of APF saw off Gautam Kathayat of Kailali 21-14, 21-14, Joseph Adhikari of the hosts dispatched his colleague Yoban Rai 21-13, 21-12, and Irfan Ansari of the hosts outplayed Ayush Bikram Shah of Kathmandu 21-12, 21-6 to secure their places in the last four.



The men´s doubles quarterfinal line-up was also completed on Wednesday. The pairs of Raju Bishwakarma and Dipak Ghimire from Jhapa, Sahadev Khadka and Kanchan Thagunna from Kailali, Dipak Bohara and Bishnu Katuwal from NPC, Bishal Pradhan and Rajib Dahal from APF, Ram Singh Chaudhary and Pashupati Paneru from Kailali, Ganesh Chand and Surya Bahadur Thapa from NPC, Dipesh Dhami and Sajan Krishna Tamrakar from APF, and Bivek Shrestha and Bikash Shrestha from NPC all registered victories to advance into the last eight of the category.



In the veterans´ above 45 years category, the pairs of Suresh Chandra Shrestha and Pushparaj Tamrakar, and Narayanman Shakya and Rajesh Shrestha of the hosts made it to the semifinals winning their respective matches. Likewise, Shiva Rai and Mohan Rai´s pair of Lalitpur and GB Chandra and Chandra Shekhar Lama´s pair of Sunsari also secured their places in the last four.



In the doubles of inter-governmental service masters´ above 35 years, the pairs of Premdhoj Shah and Durga Prasad Bhattarai, Chiranjivi Kunwar and Ratna Pokharel of APF, Rammani Mishra and Ram Singh Tamang of APF, and Ashok Singh and Yadav Prasad Chaudhary of NPC entered the semifinals winning their respective matches.
