KATHMANDU, Feb 15: With the increase in supply of vegetables and lack of storage capacity, price of major vegetables has gone down in the wholesale market by Rs 2 to Rs 14 per kg over the last week.

Price of seasonal vegetables such as white potato, red potato, carrot, cauli local, radish red, onion green and white, brinjal long and round, green peas, spinach leaf and mustard leaf has dropped over the last week mainly due to enough supply in the market from neighboring districts.[break]

A major decline in price is seen in local cauliflower as production is at peak for this seasonal vegetable. Price of cauliflower has dropped by Rs 14 per kg and reached Rs 20 per kg over the last week. Raddish red and raddish white have also become cheaper by Rs 2 per kg and reached Rs 10 and Rs 15 per kg respectively.

Similarly, price of brinjal long and round has also gone down by Rs 4 per kg and reached Rs 34 per kg over the period. Price of carrot has fallen by Rs 6 per kg and reached Rs 25 per kg and price of French bean and green peas has also gone down by Rs 5 per kg and reached Rs 60 and Rs 27 per kg in the Kalimati wholesale market.

According to Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board (KFVMDB), price of some seasonal vegetables has dropped due to more than sufficient supply in the market and lack of storage facility.

“High production of seasonal vegetables is the major reason behind the fall in price,” said Arjun Aryal, director of KFVMDB.

In normal season, around 600 metric tons of vegetables enter the valley daily from neighboring districts. But currently as the production of vegetables is very high around 750 metric tons of vegetables is entering the market.

However, price of ginger, green chilly, garlic dry Nepali and garlic dry Chinese has remind constant over the period.
