Kamal Jung Kunwar, chief conservation officer of Chitwan National Park (CNP), inaugurated the trail on Monday.
The 9-kilometer trail, which passes along the Rapti River, connects Sauraha with Patihani in the western part of CNP.
Local tourism entrepreneurs believe that this trail will expand tourism activities in other neighboring towns of Sauraha. With the opening of new trail, hotels in Patihani are hopeful of getting more visitors.
Kumal Lake, Shramik Lake, Bishajari Lake and Chhitamai Temple are the major attractions in Patihani.
"Tourists can catch sight of rhino, deer and other wild animals as well as different species of birds from the trail which passes through different community forests," Shankar Mahato, president of Patihani Buffer Zone Consumers Committee, said.
Local tourism stakeholders are also working on plans to develop other trails like Jarneli-Chhitamai, Chhitamai-Belsahar, Khorsor-Sauraha, Sauraha-Bishajarai Lake-Chhitamai Trail, Chhitamai-Gondrang, and Tikauli-Sauraha.
The Sauraha-Patihani trail will also connect Sauraha with CNP headquarters in Kasara.
There are 25 hotels and lodges in Patihani which lies in Bharatpur Sub-metropolitan City.
