Sainik lifts Phalgunanda Cup

PANCHTHAR, Jan 31: Sainik Youth Club of Jhapa won the title of the Third Phalgunanda Gold Cup, the eastern regional football tournament, on Tuesday.

Dipen Rai gave the lead to Sainik Youth in the fifth minute of the match. Dhiraj Tamang leveled the score in the 47th minute, but Samir Katuwal again put Sainik in front and Rai sealed the victory with his second goal.



The winning team received Rs 50,000 while the runner-up got Rs 25,000.



Bibek Lingden of Sainik was adjudged the man-of-the-match. Rai won the award for best forward while his teammate Rupak Gurung was adjudged the best goalkeeper of the tournament.



Likewise, Manish Gurung and Pradeep Rai of Phidim received awards for best defender and best midfielder respectively. Dhiraj Tamang of Phidim was adjudged the best player of the tournament.



Newton, Angels´ Heart win titles



Host Newton won the title of the Fourth Newton Inter-school Volleyball Tournament in boys´ section while Angels´ Heart ´A´ claimed the girls´ title.



Newton defeated Apollo 25-23, 27-25, 31-33, 25-20 on Tuesday in the boys´ final.



In all-Angels´ Heart final of girls´ section, A team beat B team 25-21, 21-25, 25-16, 25-20.



Both the winning teams bagged Rs 5,000 while runner-up teams received Rs 3,000. Bishnu Adhikari of Newton and Kamala Pun of Angels´ Heart were adjudged most valuable players respectively in boys´ and girls´ sections.


Samaj Kalyan wins C division football opener



Samaj Kalyan Khelkud Kendra started its Red Bull C Division National League campaign on a winning note on Tuesday.



Samaj Kalyan thrashed UNBC, Dang 5-0 at the National Police Academy, Maharajgunj in the opening match of the tournament.



Roshan Sapkota scored a brace for Samaj Kalyan while Bibek Pradhan, Sujan Ghale and Alig Tamang added a goal each.



Meanwhile, Satdobato Youth Club and Khumaltar Youth Club played a 1-1 draw in the second match of the day.



Sangam Ghale gave the lead to Satdobato in the second minute of the match while Rajkaji Thapa Magar leveled the score in the 69th minute.



The tournament features six teams -- the top four teams of the Martyrs Memorial C Division League and the top two teams selected through Regional League. The league winner will get Rs 150,000 while the runner-up will receive Rs 75,000.



United Academy off to winning start



United Academy and Nobel Academy started the First Olympia Cup Inter-school Basketball Tournament with wins on Tuesday in the senior boys´ category.



United defeated Sudesha Academy 40-19 as Akash Pariyar scored 15 points.



Likewise, Dibesh Shrestha´s 15 points guided Nobel Academy to a 45-11 win over the host Olympia.



In the junior girls´ category, Vidyadayani defeated Olympia 12-4. In the junior boys´ section, Neric A and B registered wins. Neric A thumped Olympia 19-8 while the B team edged past Ullens 24-20.



Daffodil into quarters



Host Daffodil B on Tuesday fixed its berth in the quarterfinals of the Fifth Daffodil Champions Cup Senior Basketball Tournament as Group D winner.



Daffodil defeated The Excelsior 23-11 with 11 points from Pratik Gauchan.



The Excelsior also advanced into the next round as the group runner-up. In the other matches of senior boys´ category, Opal and Valley Public registered wins.



Opal beat Angel Lord 54-41 and Valley Public overcame Arniko 37-10. In the girls´ category, host Daffodil edged past The Chandbagh 36-20 and NIMS thumped Baba Boarding.



In the Sixth Daffodil Cup Junior Football Tournament, Daffodil and Reed Model registered identical wins. Daffodil beat TIA 1-0 and Reed Model also edged past Brihaspati with a lone goal.



Semifinal fixtures completed



Sunil Barahi, Santosh Moktan, Milan Rai and Ramesh Dangol on Tuesday entered semifinal of the Valleywide Baneshowr Badminton Tournament in Men´s Single Category.



Barahi beat Krishna Panta 21-12, 21-11, Moktan defeated Anil Thapa 21-5, 21-5, Rai thumped Surendra Thapa 21-13, 21-11 and Dangol saw off Bidur Tiwari 21-15, 23-21.



In the men´s double category, the pair of Mani Prasad Kandawa and Bhawani Aadembe, Ujjwal Dahal and Srijan Tamrakar, Khagendra Regmi and Chandra Kumar Khapung and Anil Thamsuhang and Santosh Moktan fixed their semifinal spots.
