BAGLUNG, Oct 11: Pramod GC from Khunga village of Baglung paid Rs 450 for traveling a distance of 273 kilometers from Kathmandu to Baglung bazaar.

He was shocked when he was made to pay Rs 900 for traveling a distance of 90 kilometers from the district headquarter to Burtibang bazaar. [break]

Exorbitant fares charged by transport entrepreneurs have been financially penalizing passengers traveling along the 90-km Baglung-Burtibang section of the mid-hill highway.

“Surprisingly, no one appears concerned about the high fares,” said GC, adding that the fare mocks the rule of law. “We are paying more for traveling within our own district than we do traveling all the way from the capital to the district headquarter,” he further said.

Transport operators have raised the fares keeping in mind the rush during the festivals. Passengers have to change multiple vehicles as there are no direct vehicles for Burtibang.

Despite tens of millions invested by the state to develop the mid-hill highway, locals have to switch vehicles at Harichowr, Righa, Daga, and Bhimgithe, among other villages, making the travel to Burtibang very tedious and expensive.

Though the District Administration Office has set a fare of Rs 7.50 per kilometers, those operating vehicles along the highway are charging very high fares.

Chief District Officer Khyam Bahadur Thapa pledged to take action against transport operators overcharging passengers.
