Rs 10,000 fixed deposit for every newborn girl

The initiative is part of the municipality's "Daughter of the Municipality" program, which has been in operation since the 2023/24 fiscal year. Under the scheme, newborn girls previously received Rs 5,000, but the amount has now been doubled to Rs 10,000 from the upcoming fiscal year.

BAGLUNG, July 12: Baglung Municipality has announced that it will open a fixed deposit account worth Rs 10,000 in the name of every girl born within the municipality.

The initiative is part of the municipality's "Daughter of the Municipality" program, which has been in operation since the 2023/24 fiscal year. Under the scheme, newborn girls previously received Rs 5,000, but the amount has now been doubled to Rs 10,000 from the upcoming fiscal year.


Mayor Basanta Kumar Shrestha said the decision was approved by the recent municipal assembly. He added that a bank account will be opened in the name of every eligible newborn girl.


So far, the municipality has deposited a total of Rs 1.5 million by opening fixed deposit accounts of Rs 5,000 each for 300 girls under the program.


The deposited amount cannot be withdrawn until the account holder reaches the age of 20.
