The disturbing fact was unveiled on Sunday after police seized four sacks of rotten chicken from Trivenighat of Dhangadhi Municipality-1. The meat dealers were arrested while they were trying to smuggle the chicken to Nepal from India.[break]
Police informed that they have arrested one meat dealer while another is still at large.
According to the police, the arrested has revealed that they had bought the chicken weighing 220 kg from Indian border town of Kajariya.
“Since it is not possible to bring in live chicken due to government ban, these dealers smuggle in dead and rotten chicken and sell here,” said a local.
Meanwhile, a team of policemen also confiscated rotten chicken being sold openly at various meat shops at Pashupati tole of Dhangadi. The shops have been identified as M K Meat Shop owned by one Rubin Qureshi, and Smile Meat Shop near Nepal Rastra Bank Chowk.
Chief of National Consumer Association of Kailali, Hari Regmi shared expressed his serious concerns following the confiscation.
“These meat dealers are playing with public health. They should get maximum punishment and security agencies should increase surveillance along the border to prevent smuggling,” said Regmi.
“Actually, it is lack of strong action by authorities that has encouraged these unscrupulous meat dealers into committing such illegal acts,” added Regmi.
