There seems to be no end in sight to the row between students and dean of Tribhuvan University’s Institute of Medicine Dr Arun Sayami that started over post-graduate entrance examinations conducted in the second week of this month, thus inconveniencing people from all walks of life who throng the Tribhuvan Universtity Teaching Hospital for medical treatment. The students had not only boycotted the examinations held on March 13 and 14 but clashed with police leading to arrests and injuries. Demanding for the resignation of all officials in the Dean’s Office, doctors have joined hands and refused to admit patients since March 15 leading to a sharp dip in the occupancy of hospital beds. As of Wednesday morning, only 124 out of the total of 482 beds were occupied while those needing urgent medical attention continued to suffer outside.

A probe committee under the Dean of Management Faculty Dr Govinda Prasad Acharya was formed on March 19 but the students rejected its legitimacy leading to a complete deadlock over the issue. It is a wonder why the Education Ministry has not intervened and let the issue drag on for such a long time. Without any further delay, it should step in and make the warring factions sit down together to resolve the issue in earnest. The ministry should also take steps to give shape to a fresh probe committee to find out if the entrance papers had actually been leaked. If the committee can come out with concrete evidences that the dean had been involved in irregularities, he should be sacked and a reexamination should be conducted without any further delay. However, if the dean gets a clean chit, and the students are found protesting to fulfill their vested interests, they should be meted out exemplary punishment so that incidents such as these do not repeat in the future.

While we understand that it is natural to have differences over issues, we criticize the methods adopted by the doctors to voice their protests. Resorting to tactics that victimizes the common men and women does not befit anyone, especially doctors who are expected to put service before self. Incidents such as these will only besmirch their image in the eyes of the people. The next time they are faced with a similar situation, we urge doctors to take a pause and remember the Hippocratic Oath that they had taken before starting their practice. Maybe, that might help them to conduct themselves more responsibly.
