In 1950, the world was home to seven cities with populations of more than 5 million people. Today, there are more than 50. Many new urban residents inhabit newly constructed, unreinforced-masonry buildings that in many cases are not designed to withstand the strong motion of a quake. Saturday’s earthquake was near Kathmandu, home to about 1.1 million of Nepal’s 27 million residents.
