KATHMANDU, March 6: Home Minister Bhim Rawal has claimed that the security situation in the country has improved since he assumed the home ministry portfolio.

At a central committee (CC) meeting of the CPN-UML, he defended his performance while replying to some members who demanded his resignation, alleging his failure to maintain law and order. [break]

Speaking at the CC meeting Thursday some UML leaders had urged the party leadership and Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal to recall Rawal from the government.

According to a member present at the meeting, Rawal urged party leaders not to generalize about the overall situation just on the basis of a few incidents that took place in recent days. He claimed that improving the security situation was not possible overnight since it was a decades-old problem of society.

Dissatisfied with the home minister´s reply, some leaders including Ram Chandra Jha, Lalbabu Pundit, Yogesh Bhattarai and Thakur Gaire fielded counter questions. They argued that it was meaningless to go into details of the work done under the ministry until the result became positive.

Rawal had asked UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal, who was present at the meeting, if the demand for his resignation raised at the meeting represented the party´s official view. "I assumed the post after this CC recommended me for it. Mr. Chairman, I want to inform you that I am ready to step down if this meeting officially wants to recall me," the leader quoted him as saying.

Chairman Khanal concluded the discussion, urging members to refrain from mud-slinging. He also urged Rawal to acknowledge the concerns raised at the meeting and try to improve the law and order situation. "We are in a transitional period. The opposition is totally against the coalition government. In such a situation running the ministry is not going to be smooth sailing. Therefore, it is not the right time to demand resignation," Khanal said wrapping up the meeting.

The meeting, which was scheduled to discuss the state restructuring model, could not take up the topic.
