KATHMANDU, Dec 4: A three-km race competition for the differently-abled people will be held on Saturday morning at the Dasharath Stadium to mark the 18th International Differently-abled Day. [break]

Altogether 15 blind athletes from 14 districts will participate in the race that will begin at 8 a.m. from the stadium and take the route of Thapathali, Singha Durbar, Bhadrakali, Sahid Gate and return to the starting point.

This is the first event in Nepal in which blind athletes will cover such a long distance. The organizer, Nepal Paralympic Committee (NPC), believes that the competition will help expose the underlying talents of the differently-abled people and help create suitable atmosphere to integrate them in society.

The objective of the competition is also to create awareness about the rights of the differently-abled people, informed NPC Chairman Deepak Koirala at a press meet.

The event will help exert pressure on the government to endorse the Rights of Differently-abled People Accord conceptualized and approved by the UN on December 13, 2006.

The top three winners will bag a purse of Rs 7,000, Rs 6,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively while the remaining participants will receive Rs 500 each. The UN has contributed Rs 30,000 for organizing the race.
