A 10-member Nepali boxing team, including eight pugilists and two coaches, was scheduled to visit Pakistan by the first week of November for a 19-day training program as well as for participating in the tournament.[break]
However, Pakistan Boxing Federation, organizers of the event, informed Nepal Boxing Association (NBA) on Friday that the tournament has been postponed for a month.
According to NBA General Secretary Rajiv Shrestha, Nepali team will attend training camps from December 1 to 19 in Pakistan and participate in the tournament to be held from December 20-29 as per the revised scheduled.
The Nepali team comprises eight players -- Deepak Maharjan (81 kg), Sudesh Manandhar (52 kg), Purna Bahadur Lama (60 kg), Laxman Tamang (49 kg), Ukesh Nagarkoti (56 kg), Ratna Bahadur Tamang (64 kg), Uddhab Khatri (75 kg) and Sudhan Gurung (61 kg). The players will be accompanied by coaches Prabin Tuladhar and Bishnu Bahadur Thing.
Shrestha said training and participation in the tournament has been arranged as part of preparations for the upcoming South Asian Games (SAG) to be held in New Delhi, India in 2012.
The gold, silver and bronze medalists of each category in the tournament will bag a purse of US$ 850, US$ 500 and US$ 250, respectively. Similarly the champion and runner-up teams will bag US$ 5,000 and US$ 2,000, respectively.
Hamal, Ghale reach veterans badminton final
The duo of Jayram Hamal and Rudra Ghale have advanced into the final of the ongoing Second National Open Veteran´s Badminton Tournament on Friday in Chitwan.
Hamal and Ghale defeated the pair of Madhav Bahadur Thapa and Shailendra Ghale in two straight sets in above 55 years category to fix a place in the final.
Hamal and Ghale will meet the pair of Ramesh Kumar Shrestha and Krishna Thapa in the title clash. In the women´s 35 years and above category, the pair of Tirna Rai and Ratan Rai and the duo of Prativa Gurung and Maya Pun have entered the final.
The Rai duo defeated Jalmaya Gurung and Tara Sitaula while the pair of Gurung and Pun beat Bina Tulachan and Sita Dahal. In the men´s above 45 years category, the pair of Narayan Man Shakya and Hari Prasad Shrestha, Dumber Gurung and Manoj Shrestha, Pushpa Shrestha and Buddhi Bahadur Chaudhary and the duo of Krishna Siwakoti and Surendra Bahadur Singh fixed their respective semifinal spots.
Kamal Thapa loses final
Kamal Thapa lost the final match of the Asian Senior Open 2011 Tennis Tournament in above 55 years age category held in Pattaya, Thailand Friday.
Thapa lost to top seeded John Burness of Germany 7-6, 6-1. Thapa had taken 6-5 lead in the first set but later lost the set in tie-breaker.
The tournament recognized by International Tennis Federation was organized by Thai Tennis Federation.
Altogether 200 players participated in the tournament in seven different age group categories. Thapa is the chairman of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal.
Nepal finishes first in karate tourney
Nepal finished first in the Third International Goju-Ryu Karate Tournament Friday with 27 golds.
Apart from the 27 golds, Nepal also won 16 silver and 21 bronze medals in 39 categories.
India finished second with nine gold, 16 silver and 30 bronze medals. Bangladesh finished in the third position with two golds and three silvers. Players from Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India had participated in the tournament.
Gorkha Boys wins
Gorkha Boys Sports Club started Madan Bhandari Gold Cup Knockout Football Tournament in a winning note Friday.
In the inaugural match, Gorkha Boys defeated blue team of the organizers 2-0. Ganesh Khadka scored both goals for the winning team.
The winner of the tournament will bag a purse of Rs 150,000 while the runner-up will receive Rs 100,000. Soubhagya Youth Club will meet DMC Tulsipur in Saturday´s match.
