“Maybe I will remain in office, or maybe not. But the people will get to see outcomes of the development foundation laid by me for a long time to come,” an emotional Bhattarai said addressing a function organized to mark the 49th inception anniversary of Bharatpur Hospital in Chitwan. [break]
Bhattarai said most of the heavily invested projects have not come into operation due largely to protests and asked all not to hinder their operation, saying the issue of economic development is as important as the peace process and constitution drafting task.
Underlining the need that the country still needs foreign investment to support its development efforts, Bhattarai said, “A big project needs billions of dollars to operate and we don’t have a GDP worth even one billion. We cannot help bringing in more foreign capital.”
He also took time to reiterate that all works related to the army integration process will be completed by mid April and said the government will put up its all-out efforts on the new constitution after that.
“All these works cannot be done overnight and, for that, we need political consensus,” Bhattarai said. He, however, claimed that the new statute will be promulgated within the May 27 deadline.
