KATHMANDU, Nov 29
: Following the request from the political parties, President Ram Baran Yadav has extended the deadline to pick a new consensus prime minister by a week.

A group of top leaders from the major four parties—UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress, CPN UML and United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF)— had called on the president to request him extension after a week-long deadline issued on Friday elapsed at 4 pm, today. [break]

Earlier, UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal after a meeting with the president at the latter’s residence, Shital Niwas said that the president’s office will announce extended deadline soon.

“We have requested the president to extend the deadline. The president might extend it by six or seven days,” Khanal said to reporters.

President Dr Ram Baran Yadav had called chiefs of major four parties for a meeting at his residence in Shital Niwas this evening to discuss what to do next.

Last Friday, President Dr Ram Baran Yadv had formally given the parties a week’s time to recommend their common candidate for the top post as his repeated informal calls for parties to reach consensus bore no fruit.
