KATHMANDU, May 13: Price of powdered beverage has increased by up to 12 percent in the market, thanks to growing demand spurred by the rise in mercury. Traders say the price of powdered juice has increased due to weakening of Nepali currency vis-à-vis US dollar and rise in transportation cost.

These drinks, which are fortified with minerals and vitamins, are available in variety of flavors like orange, mango, mixed fruit, lemon, strawberry, grapes and pineapple. The demand for fruits concentrates in orange flavor is high in the market, according to traders.

“Tang, which is available in more than 30 countries, is the best-selling fruit concentrates in Nepal,” said CN Poudel, operation manager of Saleways Department Store. He said the price of powdered beverage has increased mainly because of the rise in transportation cost.

The price of 400gm pack of Tang and Rasna has increased by Rs 15 each to Rs 145 and Rs 115 respectively. Similarly, 750 gram of Savory, an Indian brand, costs Rs 263, up from last year´s Rs 253. Newly launched Prix, which is available in sachet that can make 1.5 liter drink, is available at Rs 14 per sachet.

“Demand for powdered beverage is increasing compared to liquid fruit concentrates like Druk Squash because they can be stored for longer period,” said Hari Dahal, proprietor of Ganga and Sons, Anamnagar. He said Fruit Drink, a new fruit concentrate brand from the Philippines that is available at Rs 140 for 400 gm pack, is getting good response from customers.

“Tang has become synonymous with powdered beverage,” Sabin Bhattarai, one of the proprietors of Gattekulo-based Shop@Kaya, said, explaining the growing popularity of Tang in the domestic market. According to Bhattarai, powdered beverages are bought not only for home use but also for parties and picnics.

Powdered beverages mostly come from countries like Thailand, India, Vietnam and the Philippines.
