Politicizing of budget upsets contractors

KATHMANDU, Nov 22: Contractors have urged all political parties not to link politics with government´s annual budget, which is crucial for economic development of the country.



Organizing a press conference on Thursday, they informed that the development projects have been paralyzed in the absence of sufficient budget. [break]



“We have been seeing disruptions in passing of budget since the last seven years. Politicization of budget procedure must end as almost all development projects have come to a virtual halt due to severe financial crunch,” Jayaram Lamichhane, president of Contractors´ Associations of Nepal (FCAN), told the press.



Lack of opportunities in the construction sector on the back insufficient budget is fueling exodus of workers to overseas labor market, creating a shortage of construction workers in the country.



“Thousands of construction equipment worth billions of rupees have been left to rust with development works stalled,” added Lamichhane.

FCAN´s 15th general meeting on 26th, 27th Nov.



Meanwhile, 15th annual general meeting of FCAN, an umbrella organization of over 17,000 contractors across the country, is going to be held on 26th and 27th November in Bhairahawa.



According to Rabi Singh, coordinator of the meeting, around 2,000 representatives from across the country will take part in the annual event.



The meeting is scheduled to work out future policies of FCAN after extensively discussing the impact of insufficient funding on the development projects and the resulting setback to the economy due to lack of full-fledged budget.
