KATHMANDU, April 20: Police briefly detained over two dozen Muslim activists, including former state home minister Rizwan Ansari of National Muslim Struggle Alliance (NMSA) from Bhadrakali for allegedly entering restricted area on Friday afternoon.

The Muslim activists were detained after scuffles broke out with police as they tried to prevent the protestors from entering the restricted area. [break]The activists were detained at Mahendra Police Club at exhibition road for around two hours, said DSP Dhiraj Pratap Singh, spokesperson at Metropolitan Police Range, Hanumandhoka.

However, Muslim activists refuted police allegation and claimed they didn´t breach the rules of the prohibited area.

“We were just organizing a peaceful march and heading towards Singa Durbar to submit memorandum to Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai but police arrested us,” said Seraj Ahmad Farooqui, member of the NMSA secretariat.

The NMSA demonstration was part of its first phase of protests in a bid to pressure the government to ensure the rights of Muslim community in the new constitution. The NMSA is a union of various Muslim lawmakers, organizations and activists and was formed on April 17.

Meanwhile, the alliance says it will submit memorandum to district administration offices on April 23 and organize nationwide "Chakkajam" or transport blockade on April 27 for two hours.
