Pokhara tense after truck kills students

POKHARA, Nov 8: The New Road area in Pokhara remained tense on Sunday after a truck killed two students in the morning.



The deceased have been identified as Bikash Chhantyal, 19, and Parbat Gurung (17), who were Grade XI students of Laxmi Higher Secondary School. According to eye witnesses, the truck hit the motorcycle the students were riding at 6:45 a.m. nearby the school.







After locals, students and teachers of the school started protests, police charged batons and fired tear-gas shells to bring the situation under control. Police entered the school premises and battered the protesters. A student and a teacher were injured in the clash. However, Inspector Lok Hari Khanal denied that the police entered the school premises.



Armed Police Force personnel were mobilized after the protests did not subside.



Transportation services and markets remained shut during the protests.
