“Whether or not the peace process makes headway, the prime minister is sure to tender his resignation on August 13,” said Gyawali, who is close to Khanal in the faction-ridden party. [break]
Gyawali added that the prime minister has decided to step down to pave way for a national consensus government. When asked why he is so sure about Khanal´s resignation, Gyawali said, “It was clearly written in the last press statement issued by the prime minister himself. I don´t need to clarify anything.”
He clarified that his party would not stake claim for the leadership of the national consensus government. “There should be an agreement between the Nepali Congress (NC) and the Maoist party,” said Gyawali.
On the issue of violation of party directives by Khanal, the UML secretary said that such issues should not be blown up. “It is natural to commit mistakes, but these mistakes should be corrected through criticism and self-criticism,” he argued.
Also speaking at the program, Maoist Spokesperson Dinanath Sharma said that his party has officially put forward the name of party Vice-chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai as prime ministerial candidate. “Bhattarai would be the prime minister of the next government based on national consensus. Most Nepalis have already accepted him as prime minister,” Sharma said.
He also argued that the categorization of Maoist combatants would begin immediately if the NC party agrees on the number of the combatants to be integrated into the state security force and on the rehabilitation packages for those who choose to opt out.
