In his meeting with President Dr Ram Baran Yadav on Saturday, the prime minister said he had already forwarded his proposal to the opposition parties. The prime minister said he would not hand over the government leadership to other parties unless there is a guarantee of fresh polls by mid-May.[break]
This is the first meeting of the prime minister with the president after the latter on November 23 issued a five-day deadline to the parties to form a consensus government. A cabinet meeting held the next day had flayed the president´s move.
According to a press statement issued by the prime minister´s office, the prime minister during the meeting had briefed the president about ongoing efforts made toward forging consensus. “The prime minister has expressed confidence that there will be consensus between the parties anytime soon,” the statement said.
Talking to Republica, the president´s press advisor Rajendra Dahal said it was a regular meeting between the president and prime minister. “The president asked the prime minister to make his utmost efforts to forge consensus for the formation of a consensus government and timely polls,” said Dahal.
President Dr Yadav asked Bhattarai to help resolve the political deadlock at the earliest, said Dahal.
