He also ruled out possibility of the other parties joining the Bhattarai-led government to give it a national consensus character. “It will be a waste of time to attempt to give the current government a national consensus character,” said Khanal speaking at Reporters Club, Nepal.[break]
Khanal argued that the government has already failed to live up to public expectations and that the prime minister has no alternative than to resign to pave the way for a national consensus government.
The UML chief also claimed that the government will be dissolved any time soon. “The government is staggering under its own weight and collapse anytime,” he said.
When asked what step will he take if the prime minister doesn´t step down, Khanal said his party will do all to topple the government and form a national consensus government. He said Bhattarai failed to implement the seven-point and the six-point peace deals so he should no longer remain in the government.
It may be recalled that the Nepali Congress (NC) and the UML on Tuesday had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Maoists to conclude the peace process.
The former prime minister also informed reporters that the major parties are holding talks at Gokarna on Wednesday to resolve the disputes over the system of governance, judiciary, citizenship and state restructuring. He argued that while he is optimistic about consensus on the system of government, serious discussions are needed on the issues of state restructuring.
He said the reports of the state restructuring commission are problematic, but added that the parties will resolve the issue through talks.
Khanal also demanded that the government should create atmosphere of trust by withdrawing the cabinet decision legalizing insurgency-era land deals arbitrated by the Maoists.
