KATHMANDU, May 16: As the deadline of the Constituent Assembly (CA) draws closer, Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal has expedited consultations with political parties in a bid to garner their support to pass the government´s proposal seeking extension of the CA for one more year.

The prime minister met Chairman of Rastriya Janamorcha Party Chitra Bahadur KC and Vice-chairman Rashmi Raj Nepali on Monday to convince them about extending the CA term, according to Surya Thapa, the prime minister´s press advisor.

In response, KC told the prime minister that the decision to extend the CA term would be wrong.

"We want this government to function well. However, the term can be extended only through consensus by expediting the peace process," Thapa quoted KC as saying to the prime minister during the meeting.

"Our party has not taken any decision on CA term extension." In the meantime, the prime minister also met lawmaker Pari Thapa of CPN (United) to discuss the CA term extension.
