KATHMANDU, June 30: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has announced his resignation in his address to the nation. The address began at 6 p.m. as scheduled.
In his address, PM Nepal blamed the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) for the continued political deadlock. He also mentioned a number of "achievements" that his 13-month old government had been able to accomplish. He will head to the President´s Office at Shital Niwas, his close aides told myrepublica.com. [break]
Thirteen months after he assumed the office, Nepal has decided to resign from the post.
Prime Minister Nepal began the address after holding last cabinet meeting at his official residence at Baluwatar. The meeting began at 5 pm, according Minister for Law Prem Bahadur Singh.
Earlier, the prime minister attended a standing committee meeting of CPN UML at Balkhu. He informed about his resignation in the meeting, according to Defense Minister Bidya Bhandari.
Prime Minister Nepal was elected in the post on May 23, 2009 after the Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal resigned on May 4 over a row on dismissal of then army chief Rookmangud Katawal.
