KATHMANDU, June 27: A writ petition was filed at the Supreme Court on Monday seeking nullification of the government decision to promote Kuber Singh Rana to the post of Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Nepal Police.

Lawyer Sunil Ranjan Singh filed the petition against Rana´s promotion.

The government promoted Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Rana on June 23, choosing him as the country´s future police chief.

The writ petitioner claims that the decision should be made null and void on two grounds: first, Rana was involved in human rights violation, and second, there was serious procedural flaw in the promotion of Rana as pointed out by the Public Service Commission (PSC).

PSC pointed that the government flouted constitutional and legal provisions while promoting Rana to the post.

Rana has occasionally been dragged into controversy surrounding the murder of a person in Dhanusha by the Nepal Army during the insurgency. Rana was posted as the district police chief of Dhanusha at the time.
