The two sides in the party have failed to reach consensus on the formation of the body even after a series of meeting as President Sushil Koirala insisted that he can include only four members including Treasurer Chitra Lekha Yadav in the parliamentary board from the rival faction. [break]
“We have been demanding six members in the parliamentary board from our side,” said a leader from the rival faction led by Sher Bahadur Deuba.
As no parliamentary board was formed even after party headquarters received nominations from all the districts, Deuba himself had called General Secretary Krishna Sitaula to his residence some two weeks ago and asked him to take initiative to form the board. Later, Sitaula and Dr Ram Sharan Mahat had reached Deuba´s residence for consultations.
As there was still no consensus, Koirala called Deuba himself to his residence in Maharajgunj Friday evening and offered to include three members from his side, including someone to fill the long vacant post of joint general secretary.
Treasurer Chitra Lekha Yadav, who is an ex-officio member of the parliamentary board, is already represented in the body. However, Deuba turned down the offer outright.
Sources said Deuba walked out of the informal meeting Saturday morning as Koirala insisted that he would include only four members in the 14-member body from the Deuba side.
A meeting of Deuba faction leaders held at Budhanilakantha later in the afternoon concluded that Koirala´s offer to include only four members from their side was not fair. “Since our strength has increased considerably following the general conventions of various sister organizations, we will demand 50 percent if we are denied our fair share,” another Deuba faction leader told Republica.
