PHUKET, Feb 22: Doctors treating former crown prince Paras Bir Bikram Shah, who is battling for his life in a Bangkok hospital following a major heart attack, have said that his overall condition is still critical as there has been no significant improvement in the past 24 hours.

Sunil Khadka, a Bangkok-based businessman and general secretary of the Non-Resident Nepalis Association (Thailand Chapter) told Republica that a second CT scan conducted on Thursday showed no major improvement. [break]

The result of the second CT scan was almost the same as the first taken on Wednesday, indicating that the patient continues in a critical condition, he said.

Khadka further said that doctors were trying to bring the body temperature and the functions of vital organs around to normal before conducting further tests, but he could not provide details. Doctors also recommended an MRI test but it was not performed in view of continued fluctuations in the heart beat rate.

According to sources, Shah was still unconscious in the ICU at Samitivej Hospital at Sukumvit Soi 49. The hospital promotes medical tourism and is popular among Japanese and Koreans. Meanwhile, the hospital has started saying that no patient named Paras Shah has been admitted there after it started getting a flood of inquires

Shah was brought to the hospital after he suffered a major cardiac arrest -- his second since September 2007 -- at Khadka´s apartment at Rama 9 in Bangkok, Tuesday night. Shah had been living there for around the last two months.
