KATHMANDU, Aug 21: The Metropolitan Crime Division (MCD) on Friday arrested owners of 11 more education consultancies in the Valley following complaints that they functioned as manpower agencies.

According to the police, Kalimati-based Express Entry Education World collected Rs 4.5 million from 11 persons promising them the job of security guard in South Africa. Police arrested Sadhana Basnet, owner of the consultancy, based on complaints filed by the victims. The consultancy had been taking Rs 550,000 per person for the job in South Africa. The consultancy had already prepared medical and other documents of the youths aspiring to work in South Africa, according to the police.

"The victims have filed complaints of fraud against other consultancies as well," said the police.

The latest action follows Tuesday's operation by the crime division. The police had raided 23 educational consultancies on Tuesday.

Among the arrested are owners of Express Entry Education World, Goodwill Consult 319-Kamalpokhari, Oasis Japanese Language Consultancy, Blue Sky Immigration Students Consultancy and Globe-ed Consultant.

Likewise, Worldwide Int'l Education Counseling, Sinjitsu Educational Consultancy, Skyler Education & Business Solution and PIT Education were also raided and their owners taken to judicial custody.

In the first crackdown on the consultancies, the police had seized the documents of 23 consultancies for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the Educational Consultancy Association of Nepal (ECAN), an umbrella organization of educational consultancies, has condemned police action, saying it was tarnishing their reputation.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) had recently sent a letter to the MCD seeking police intervention on increasing complaints against the consultancies running illegally.

As of now, 284 educational consultancies have been registered under the MoE. But the police estimate that a lot more are running without the permission of the government.
