As per a study conducted by an NGO called Mercy Corps, investment of one Euro in pre-information system could prevent damage equivalent to 3.5 Euros caused by natural disasters.
The study report shows that 26,656 people in the country lost their life, 4.7 million people were directly affected and 841,000 hectares of land was destroyed due to natural disasters since 37 years. Similarly, 236,000 cattle perished in the natural disasters in over 37 years.
The Ministry of Home Affairs, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Practical Action and Mercy Corps have joined hands for expanding the disaster warning systems for mitigating damage caused by the natural disasters and, in this connection, conducting national, regional and district-level workshops, orientation training and interaction with the participation of the people from flood-affected areas.
A natural disaster mitigation campaign is underway in collaboration and coordination with over 200 stakeholders from Banke, Bardiya, Kailali, Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, Chitwan, Sarlahi, Saptari and Sunsari districts, the districts identified as at most-risk districts from natural disasters in the country.
