The bridge is a part of the Highway that connects Tanahun and Chitwan districts.[break] The youngsters have been permitting only one vehicle at a time on the bridge since last Thursday after the support broke down.
Jay Gurung, a local youth, said the arrangement was enforced keeping in view the risk of accident as there is more traffic during in the festive season.
Managing traffic over the bridge has become a daily routine for some 15 youngsters.
Gurung said the bridge is in a dilapidated state as planks of wood have decayed. Also, the bridge has holes from which one can see the river flowing below it.
Gurung said local youths decided to work as volunteers after the Western Regional Road Division Office promised to repair the bridge after Tihar.
Bishnu Prasad Poudel, senior divisional engineer at the division said the bridge has become weak owing to excessive load.
Shaligram Regmi, divisional chief, said the Department of Roads and the line ministry have been informed about the situation.
The bridge was built by China in 1971.
