KATHMANDU, June 23: Republica and Softwarica College’s 11th Higher Education and Career Fair on June 22, its second day, saw some very interested students looking for higher educational opportunities.

The fair, running for two more days, until Sunday, has a plethora of colleges offering admissions and counseling to students at the Bhrikuti Mandap’s Exhibition Hall.[break]

Young students seem to be attending the fair for educational counseling primarily but one aspect of the fair that young people often don’t know about is the on-the-spot admissions that many colleges are offering.

Some colleges like International School of Management & Technology that offer international degrees seem to be open to the idea as long as students have very good grades, grades above their cut-off rates, and have taken an English equivalency test with good scores.

But most Nepal-based colleges seem to be against the idea of on-the-spot admissions because they are catering to Nepali students who can afford to take a trip to the college and sit for a brief entrance exam.

“Since the International School of Management & Technology (ISMT) offers British degrees that require students to have very good command over English, we require students to take the IELTS test as the entrance exam,” says Yogesh Upreti, CEO at ISMT, adding, “But if students have very good high-school grades and have already given their IELTS and have scored very well in the test, then we offer them admission right at the fair. They need to bring in their original certificates and a photocopy of their documents and we make them fill up the college forms here itself and they are admitted into our institution.”

Many schools and colleges are conducting counseling sessions at the fair and are on the lookout for exceptional students who can benefit at their institution, and if students have the scores to back them up, getting admission is not a very difficult job.

The fair also boasts international schools in India and Malaysia and these colleges also are open to the idea of on-the-spot admissions.

Many Indian colleges like Gandhi University and Bhagwan University have local admission commissions in Nepal and these commissions can provide interested students admission to the colleges at the fair itself.

Students need to bring in their original certificates as well as photocopies and need to have with them the admission fees, and admission is confirmed.

“Colleges like Gandhi and Bhagwan have made us the local admission council, so we basically decide who is eligible to attend these colleges,” says Ambika Dhungel, Chairperson at Shatakshee Educational Foundation P. Ltd.

“After we confirm admission to the university, the official letter from the college arrives within one to two working days. Students interested in on-the-spot admission to these universities in India have to meet us at the fair with their original documents, photocopies, a copy of their citizenship and two passport-sized photo and their admission fees,” she adds.

The fair catered to high school students and high school graduates have colleges that offer +2 and A-Level degrees for SLC graduates and colleges that offer Bachelor’s on Computing, Bachelor’s in Business Studies, Bachelor’s in Tourism and Hospitality Management, among many other courses for high school graduates.

The fair also has stalls for Danish Advance Placement diplomas and some Master’s Level degrees as well.
