A team of five students, Sharmila Thapa, Rajani Shahi, Asmita Geri, Sabita Subedi and Sujan Shrestha, and their teacher Bimala Pyakurel, chose the topic of Road Safety Campaign in Society and submitted a proposal that they prepared within five hours.
The winners were selected through online voting by a panel of judges and the result was announced on March 17. The team has also prepared a video that shows the present state of road safety and how they are going to implement the project and make it sustainable.
According to Sharmila Thapa, a member of the team and a Nursing student, the proposal included the issues like raising awareness about road safety, reducing road accidents, promoting traffic systems, first-aid training and encouraging people to get insured.

“The full implementation of the project is yet to be done,” said Thapa, adding, “We’ll introduce our project to the stakeholders and coordinate with traffic police, driving centers, insurance companies and schools.”
On March 25, the team organized a networking event at Nepalgunj.
“At the event, we talked about the present condition of roads in Nepalgunj and introduced the participants about what we will be doing,” said Bimala Pyakurel, a team member and teacher at Madhya Paschim Nursing Campus.
Change Fusion Nepal has been providing mentorship for the team since February to build on the proposal they had prepared in just five hours. Change Fusion Nepal and British Council will be providing mentorship for the team for six months.
The team has been making people aware through street dramas, posting traffic signs and signals, printing booklets about awareness and workshops in coordination with traffic police.
The team will receive an award of 1000 pounds from the British Council for the implementation of the project.
“We will make zebra crossings, place traffic signals and repair and make the traffic signals visible with the award amount,” said Thapa.
“Moreover, we will organize rallies for awareness, traffic weeks, dramas, workshops and provide first aid training to the traffic police and students,” Thapa added.
