KATHMANDU, Jan 6: The Supreme Court (SC) on Sunday refused to issue an interim order against the government´s decision to suspend Vice-chancellor of Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) Sangita Bhandari.

A division bench of Justices Kalyan Shrestha and Girish Chandra Lal said that the apex court cannot issue an interim order as demanded by the writ petitioner stating that a committee formed by the prime minister has been looking into the issue.[break]

Earlier, a single bench of Justice Damodar Prasad Sharma on December 9 had stayed the government´s decision and had also issued a show cause notice to the government over its decision to suspend Bhandari.

Challenging the government´s decision to suspend her, Bhandari had moved the SC on December 7.

Bhandari and rector of PAHS Saumya Bhattarcharya were suspended for a week after Prime Minister Baburam Bhattara formed a three-member probe committee on December 5 to look into a dispute that has plagued PAHS for the last two months. The probe committee has been asked to submit its report within a week.

As per the PAHS regulations, office bearers of the institution are automatically suspended after they face allegations.

The doctors and health workers had been organizing a series of protests after VC Bhandari appointed Dr Bhattacharya as rector of PAHS. They had been demanding an end to political interference in the hospital.
