KATHMANDU, Dec 11: Former national team striker Nirajan Rayamajhi, 31, made surprise appearance from second division outfit Madhyapur Youth Association (MYA) on Sunday in the Martyrs Memorial Red B Division Football League.

Rayamajhi who holds the highest goal scorer record for the national side jointly with Hari Khadka has 13 goals in his name. On Sunday, Rayamajhi scored lone goal in MYA´s 1-0 win over Kathmandu Club at the Nepal Police Academy ground.[break]

Rayamajhi who had announced retirement from the national team some three years ago was out of the football circuit since last one year owing to personal reasons. The last time he made appearance in the competitive football was during previous edition of Budhasubba Gold Cup at Dharan, Sunsari.

"I have not appeared in standard size football ground since Budhasubba Cup, but I used to play football at a small ground in Jorpati with my friends for entertainment and fitness," Rayamajhi said.

"I was not involved with any team since last year and was free. So, I decided to play from MYA after the club´s manager Asta Kumar Kaway requested me to play. "

"As I have friendly relation with the club as well as it is my neighborhood team, I accepted the request. I am not playing for money and have not demanded a single penny from them," Rayamajhi said.

"The club is also working very hard to be elevated to the top flight and I also played from the Madhyapur during initial days of my career in the Municipality Cup and other tournaments. So, I could not turn down the request," Rayamajhi said.

"Now, my only aim is take the club to A division and return in the top flight football. If MYA elevates me to top flight, I shall play from the club otherwise I may join other top flight teams."

Though Rayamajhi joined MYA training since Friday he insists to be fit due to his continuity with football.

The last time Rayamajhi played top flight football was during 2010 A division league from New Road Team (NRT). He had scored four goals in 15 matches. He was included in the starting line in 13 matches and played 1,069 minutes in total.

MYA´s hopes alive

Madhyapur Youth Association (MYA) kept afloat its hope for top flight on Sunday after it defeated Mahabir Club 1-0 during B Division Football League being held in Nepal Police Academy, Maharajgunj.

The result possible following goal from Nirajan Rayamajhi gave fourth victory for MYA against relegation threatened Mahabir. Rayamajhi scored in the 16th minute. MYA now has 15 points in its kitty along with Sankata, Birgunj Youth and Pulchowk Sports Club. Star Club leads the table with 16 points. The defeat became seventh for Mahabir.

In another match, Kathmandu Club saw its division hope fading away after relegation-threatened Boys Sports Club registered 2-0 win. Saroj Gurung gave an early lead to Boys Sports in the second minute and Raman Singh doubled scoring one minute from time. With its second win, Boys Sports has seven points and is in 11th position.
