The decision of the president´s office comes in the wake of the failure of the political parties to form consensus government even after two separate deadlines given by the president expired Thursday evening. [break]The president had extended the deadline for a week last Thursday after the parties asked him to give them one more week.
Talking to Republica, the president´s press advisor Rajendra Dahal said the parties have been invited for a meeting at the president´s office for Friday morning. “The president will learn about the efforts made at consensus and the achievements,” Dahal said.
Dahal said the president´s office will take a decision only after learning about how many more days the parties want for forging consensus.
Earlier at the three-party meeting held at the Special Committee Secretariat in New Baneshwar, UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML had decided to ask the president to extend the deadline for forming consensus government yet again after they failed to reach agreement.
Talking to media persons after the meeting, NC General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula said they failed to make any agreement as the ruling parties put different conditions including making agreement on contentious issues of the new statute.
“This is clearly an attempt to prolong the stay of the current government in power,” he said.
UCPN (Maoist) spokesman Agni Sapkota said though they failed to arrive at consensus the parties have decided to continue more talks in the coming days. “The president has to extend the deadline since we have failed to arrive at any consensus,” he said.
UML Vice Chairman Bamdev Gautam said since the Maoists are putting conditions one after another, there is no point holding talks with them. “I don´t see any possibility of agreement any time soon. Now there is no option left for the opposition parties except taking to the streets and for the ruling parties except suppressing those protests,” he said.
