Of more than 1,500 Nepali workers -- most of whom were being employed as security guards at Macau´s world-class casinos and hotels -- around 150 have already left the city after their job contracts were not renewed after they expired at the end of July. Fifty-three Nepali security guards working at Fahous Palace Casino retuned to Nepal last week.
The casino was employing about 137 Nepali workers as security guards.
Though Nepali workers are quite popular in Macau as sincere security guards, the government policy of promoting local job opportunities for local people has compelled the employers terminate work permit granted to Nepali workers, said Purna Gurung, one of the employers in Macau.
"As the result of government´s new employment policy, 40 to 50 percent of the Nepali security guard might be forced to return home," Gurung added.
Most of the security guards earn between Rs 75,000 to Rs 90,000 per month in Macau and most of hotels have provided compensation worth Rs 15,000 to those who have lost their job as a result of the new policy.
Along with Nepali security guards, the new policy has also affected workers coming from mainland China, the Philippines, India and Vietnam.
