The request by the embassy comes after two babies were found abandoned by their mothers apparently fearing embarrassment back home. Illegal migrant workers can obtain travel documents to return home under the amnesty till June 30.[break]
“We have learnt that some Nepali women have discarded their babies born out of illicit and coerced relations with Kuwaiti nationals due to embarrassment,” Pushpa Raj Bhattarai, the second secretary at the embassy, said. “They have handed over their babies to other nationals. But it is not a right way to tackle the problem. The babies discarded by them will be more prone to various forms of maltreatment.”
According to Bhattarai, there is no adoption law in Kuwait so the discarded children will not be adopted legally by other nationals. This makes the discarded children further vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. “They can be used for anything,” Bhattarai said.
As of now, over 2,500 Nepali workers, who were working illegally in Kuwait, have obtained travel documents to return to Nepal. Of them, some 15 Nepali housemaids have taken travel documents for their babies as well.
But many housemaids have still not taken travel documents for their children born in Kuwait out of illicit or forced relations.
