Nepal to provide aid to Japan victims

KATHMANDU, March 24: The Government of Nepal is providing 5,000 pieces of blankets to the earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan.



The relief materials will be distributed to people victimized by the natural disaster in Japan within a day or two, said Foreign Secretary Madan Kumar Bhattarai.



Bhattarai shared this information at the meeting of the Legislature-Parliament´s Committee on International Relations and Human Rights held Thursday. [break]



Similarly, discussions are on for providing economic and food assistance to Japan, said Bhattarai.



A powerful earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale and devastating tsunami that followed hit Japan causing massive loss of life and property recently.



The government has prioritized rescuing the Nepali people in Gulf counties like Libya and Kuwait who are under threat due to political unrest there and it has been working accordingly, Secretary Bhattarai said.



Likewise, efforts are being made through the Home Ministry at controlling the cross-border crimes at the Indo-Nepal border areas, he added.



According to Bhattarai, the government is holding consultations with the finance and labour ministries to exchange money brought by the Nepali workers returned from Libya.



Lawmkers Ishawari Dahal, Renu Yadav, Ramprit Paswan, Kiran Yadav and Namgyal Lama also expressed their views on measures being taken to curb cross-border crimes along the Nepal-India border and on the progress on rescuing the Nepali workers stranded in the Gulf countries.
