The South-South Cooperation is often used by policymakers to describe the exchange of resources, technology and knowledge between developing countries. The UN established the Unit for South-South Cooperation to promote trade and collaboration between developing countries.
Addressing the Second Committee of the General Assembly on the Agenda item 24 in New York, Bairagi further said that the UN must respond to the development needs of the program countries in coordination with their development policies and programs.
"It is important to stress that an efficient, coherent and adequately-funded UN development system contributes to the national efforts towards eradicating poverty and achieving sustained, inclusive and equitable economic growth and sustainable development..." he further said.
Saying that the South-South cooperation offers a great potential to transform the global development landscape, Bairagi also highlighted its potential for trade, investment, economic and technological cooperation.
"Enhanced South-South cooperation will play an important role in building productive capacity of the Least Developed Countries across the board, which is critical to enable them to catch up with the rapidly emerging South," he said.
