Nepal into volleyball semis<br/>Mixed results in chess

KATHMANDU, Dec 4: Nepali national team has advanced into the semifinals of the Martyrs Memorial Gold Cup International Invitational Volleyball Tournament being held at Bodoland, Assam, India on Friday. [break]



Nepal were bound to play until the fourth set as the opponents Punjab Police took the second set 25-23. In the other sets Nepal had an easy win 25-18, 25-16 and 25-13 respectively from the first set.



Punjab Police, the defending champions, were taken as one of the title contenders.



With the win, Nepal booked place in the last four as the winners of group ´B´.



Earlier, Nepal enjoyed walkover from NF Railways. In their first match Nepal beat Eastern Railways.



Now, Nepal will take on Kokrajhar, the hosts, to determine their fate for the final.





Mixed results in chess



KATHMANDU, Dec 4: Nepali top seeded players Badri Lal Nepali, Bishwa Vijaya Gimire and Niraj Niraula won their respective eighth round matches on Friday in the ongoing Third Jugal Kishore Newatia Memorial International Open Rating Chess Tournament being held in Assam, India.



Likewise, Prem Krishna Maharjan, Bikram Priye, Brij Bihari Shah, Rabindra Shakya, Balram Pun, Damodar Gaiju, Prakash Nepal, Herakaji Maharjan were the other victorious players.



U-11 and unrated player Devanshu Ghimire got walkover while Sanjay Maharjan played a draw. Suman Shrestha,Sajin Maharjan, Bikash Koluju, Harichandra Chaulagain, Ram SP Shah, Padam Rupacha, Jivan Mainali, Raju Subedi and Birendra Kumar Mahato suffered losses.





Hosts, Ever Young start with win



KATHMANDU, Dec 4: The hosts Newton ´A´ and Ever Young ´B´ started on a winning note under boys´ category in the Second Newton Inter-school Valley-wide Volleyball Tournament that kicked off on Friday at the hosts´ court, Baluwatar.



Newton ´A´ eased past Nagarjun Academy 25-15, 25-9 and Ever Young ´B´ saw off Angel Heart 25-20, 25-19. Likewise, hosts Newton ´B´ ousted Angel Heart 25-20, 25-19. However, in another match they suffered defeat at the hands of Kamana 11-25, 25-21, 13-25.



Under girls´ section, AIA beat SEB 25-17, 10-25, 25-21 and Angel Heart thrashed Kamana 25-12, 25-9. Similarly, New Diamond edged past Gyan Sudha 25-4, 25-13.



Meanwhile, Newton honored national volleyball referee KB Rana and National Sports Council´s Durga Prasad Dulal with a cash of Rs 3,000 and certificate each.
