The bureau has seven members -- three from Africa, two from Asia and one each from Eastern Europe and Latin America. The other member elected from Asia is Turkmenistan. The group has elected Paraguay as the chair of the group for the two- year tenure. The chairmanship rotates among the bureau members.
The release added that the new bureau was elected under the new rules of the group, adopted by a Ministerial Meeting of the LLDCs on September 25, 2009, on the sidelines of the 64th UNGA.
The LLDCs Group consists of 31 landlocked developing countries, among them 15 are from Africa, 10 from Asia, four from Europe and two from Latin America. The group was established with the objective of working in cohesion and close cooperation to deal with the matters of interest to the group.
Earlier on December 22, Nepal was nominated as regional coordinator of the group for Asia to suggest two candidates from Asia for the new bureau. The release informed that an informal meeting of the Asian LLDCs on January 4 had finalized Nepal and Turkmenistan as the candidates from the Asian region.
At the meeting on Tuesday, Nepal´s envoy to the UN Gyan Chandra Acharya presented a report on the informal consultation held under Nepal’s role as a regional coordinator, the release said.
