SOLUKHAMBU, March 10: Around 1,000 households of Necha Bedghari VDC of Solukhambu had happily made monetary contributions when it was said that the proposed Solu Khola Twintar Micro Hydro Project would generate enough electricity to light up their homes.

Five years on, the project which had started in 2008 with the aim of generating electricity by 2012 is still nowhere near completion. It was said that the project would generate 100KW of electricity. [break]

Apart from erecting a few electric poles nothing has been done so far, said a local. “They say around Rs 15 million has already been spent on the project but there is no visible progress,” he said.

The locals have also accused the project officials of financial irregularities.

According to Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC), it had contributed Rs 15 million for the project of which Rs 9 million has already been spent. Similarly, another Rs 46 million had been collected from the locals.

“We had contributed funds for the project thinking we would have electricity one day. But now it seems our money has gone down the drain,” said Raj Kumar Rai of Necha Bedghari VDC-5.

However, project chief Harka Man Rai claimed that the project had been delayed due to lack of roads to the project site.
