BIRATNAGAR, April 11: Dr Shekhar Koirala, 57, of Nepali Congress won the Morang-7 constituency in the Constituent Assembly by-election, election officials said in Biratnagar, Saturday. [break]
Dr Koirala secured 12,071 and his nearest rival Chum Narayan Tabedar of Madhesi People´s Rights Forum (MPRF) got 11,379. Earlier, unofficial election results had shown Koirala’s victory by securing 12,061 votes against his rival’s 11,390. Senior MPRF leader Bijay Kumar Gachchhedar had won this constituency in last year’s CA election by securing 18,416 votes. Gachchhedar resigned from this constituency as he also won a CA seat from Sunsari-3 constituency. This constituency had long been an NC stronghold, but MPRF had upset NC in last year’s election.
MPRF candidate Jayaram Yadav, 30, secured victory in Morang-5 constituency, which was vacated by MPRF chief Upendra Yadav.
Following their victories, NC and MPRF activists and supporters have taken out victory rallies in this eastern town.
