Inaugurating the meeting, Nepali Congress president and former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala said politics of consensus, coordination and unity was necessary for nationality, democracy and socialism.
He appealed the NC leaders and activists to understand the serious situation of the country and urged to move forward for nation building process preserving the party´s ideals and history.

NC president Koirala called the Maoists for consensus and talks renouncing their all protest programs. Unified CPN (Maoist) is launching protest programs nationwide from today demanding ´civilian supremacy´.
Koirala said post of the party president should not be weak in the party statute and said, "Mahasamiti meeting will strengthen the party unity. We were united, are united and will remain united."
Some 1200 Mahasamiti members are participating the 3-day meeting would discuss on party´s statute, state restructuring, political proposal and report of party general secretary.

It is the first NC Mahasamiti meeting after the party was united some three years ago.
On Sunday morning, at the meeting venue, the Nepal Trade Union Congress at the United Telecom Limited (UTL) has protested Minister of Labor Mohammad Aftab Alam’s decision.
They accused Alam of not implementing the government’s agreement with UTL regarding re-appointment of employees dismissed by the private Telecom company.
