KATHMANDU, Nov 2: The ongoing Mahasamiti meeting of Nepali Congress (NC) began deliberations on the draft statute of the party prepared by Krishna Prasad-led Statute Drafting Committee on Monday. [break]
Altogether 34 members held deliberations on the statute amendment draft proposal on Monday, according to NC General Secretary Bimalendra Nidhi. Most of those holding deliberations supported the idea of directly electing all office bearers of the party through general convention.
The NC Central Working Committee (CWC) had forwarded the dispute over leadership to the Mahasamiti meeting with three alternatives as CWC members failed at unanimity over a proposal to elect all office bearers through the party general convention.
The three alternatives include directly electing all party office bearers through the general convention as proposed by the Sitaula committee; upholding the existing provision for nominating half of the total CWC members and giving authority to the party president to nominate office bearers; and keeping the provision of electing office bearers except the president from among the elected CWC members.

Nidhi said some of those speaking at Monday´s meeting had also advocated for two other options on party leadership. The deliberations on the statute draft will continue Tuesday.
Those holding deliberations on Monday´s meeting include Surya Man Gurung, Rajan Panta, Narayan Karki, Siddha Raj Ojha, Ram Bahadur Basnet, Bik Bahadur Limbu, Urba Dutta Khanal, Ambika Basnet, Raghu Paudel, Laxman Basnet, Mahadev Badu and Dev Raj Joshi. Chandra Bhandari, Moktar Alam, Min Bishwakarma, Umesh Jung Rayamajhi, Krishna Amatya, Kamal Pangeni, Bishnu Kumar Rai, Prithvi Man Gurung and Chet Man Shrestha were also among those speaking during the meeting.
Addressing the meeting, Mahasamiti members had expressed worry over the party´s "abandoning of democratic socialist values". They also alleged that the Statute Drafting Committee failed to incorporate the concerns of youths, workers and indigenous nationalities, among others, in the draft statute.
