KATHMANDU, June 22: An informal meeting of the Nepali Congress (NC) Central Working Committee members on Thursday decided to take initiative to form a monitoring committee to oversee the implementation of 29 May five-point deal.

The meeting called by NC Acting President Ram Chandra Paudel expressed dissatisfaction over the failure of the implementation of the deal. "The meeting was held as there has not been any significant progress regarding implementation of the five-point deal even as 25 days have already passed," said NC CWC member Narahari Acharya. NC President Sushil Koirala is currently in the US for health checkup.

According to Acharya, the meeting decided to take initiative for forming the monitoring committee in parliament and to press concerned parties for the implementation of the deal.

The meeting doubted the Maoist commitment to concluding the peace process as senior Maoist leaders have recently been airing disputing views regarding combatants integration and rehabilitation.

According to another CWC member Dr Ram Sharan Mahat, the meeting decided not to obstruct budget. It also lauded the system adopted by the government to hold pre-budget discussions. "As an opposition party we will see the content and policies incorporated in the budget and decide whether to cooperate with the government," he said.

Some 15 NC CWC members including Sher Bahadur Deuba, Krishna Sitaula, Chitra Lekha Yadav, Gopal Man Shrestha, Bimalendra Nidhi, Arjun Narsingh KC, Deep Kumar Upadhyaya and Bal Bahadur KC participated in the meeting held at NC headquarters, Sanepa. The leaders have decided to sit again on Saturday.

The meeting also dwelt on the alleged involvement of NC General Secretary Sitaula in the Sudan scam. Most leaders maintained that the issue was not a matter of any controversy or debate as the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority has not implicated Sitaula in the multi-million dollar scam.
