KATHMANDU, March 27: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala has proposed dissolution of office bearers´ body of the party´s sister organization Nepal Students´ Union (NSU) and hold a fresh election to appoint a new body.

President Koirala made the proposal during the Central Working Committee meeting held at the party´s headquarters in Sanepa on Sunday.[break]

President Koirala had formed a committee that comprised General Secretary Prakash Man Singh and Bal Bahadur KC some two months ago to study about the party´s sister organizations and make necessary recommendations to reenergize them.

General Secretary Singh had briefed the CWC meeting about their findings and proposed forming an ad hoc committee to hold fresh election of the NSU. Those in the ad hoc committee won´t get chance to contest in the fresh election of the party´s students´ body as per the proposal made by Singh.

Singh had also presented draft statute of the student´s body in the meeting, according CWC member Gagan Thapa. The NSU has been virtually dysfunctional after unification of then NC (Democratic) with NC some three years ago.

The CWC meeting on Sunday was largely dominated by the issues of party cadres who had suffered at the hands of Maoists during the conflict. After CWC member Kul Bahadur Gurung read out memorandum presented by National Society of Conflict Victims at the meeting, most CWC members criticized the party leadership for failing to strongly take up the issue of conflict victims.

Over a dozen CWC members including Sher Bahadur Deuba, Bimalendra Nidhi, Dipak Giri, Gagan Thapa, Shankar Bhandari, Dilendra Prasad Badu, Dhan Raj Gurung, Nabindra Raj Joshi had criticized the party leadership for taking up the issue of conflict victims only when the party was in opposition.

They alleged that the party leadership raised only the issue of the management of Maoist combatants while ignoring other issues such as return of the seized property and providing justice and relief to those directly affected by the Maoists.

Among other things, the meeting passed a resolution to pay tribute to late Hashina Devi Shrestha, wife of martyr Gangalal Shrestha, NC Gulmi district chapter secretary Arjun Bahadur Parajuli, 42, and former secretary of the NC chapter of Sankhuwasabha Jivan Regmi. The next meeting is slated for Monday at 3 pm.
