According to reports from our district correspondents, people organized condolence meetings and expressed a common concern over the future of Nepali politics following Koirala´s demise.[break]
In Udaypur, Yuvraj Karki of Triyuga municipality-1 has decided to observe religious mourning for 13 days. Twenty-nine other people in the area have tonsured their heads.
In Palpa, cadres and well-wishers took out a rally to mourn Koirala´s death. Government as well as private offices and the market remained closed in the district headquarters Tansen. Koirala´s pictures and condolence books were kept at several places in Tansen market.
Similarly, locals organized condolence meetings in Chitwan. People gathered at several places to sign in the condolence books including at Gitanagar, Indrapuri, Patihani, Ratnanagar, and Dharmachowk and Bharatpur. Many of them even observed a fast as part of their mourning. Offices, schools, factories, industries and other businesses remained closed.
Also, people across the far-flung villages in Chitwan mourned spontaneously. Many cadres gathered at NC party office in Narayanghat tonsured their heads. Similar activities were held in neighboring Nawalparasi and Makwanpur districts.
Condolence meetings were also held in Jhapa, Kakarbhitta, Dhulabari, Bhadrapur and Birtamod. Television sets were placed at public places for people to watch the live telecast of Koirala´s funeral ceremony.
Parties pay tributes
Political parties have also issued condolence messages following Koirala´s death.
Issuing a statement, Madhesi People´s Rights Forum said, "The sad demise has been a big loss in the transitional situation." The party said that it withdrew its protests programs till Tuesday to mourn the death of Koirala.
Similarly, Rastriya Janasakti Party (RJP) in a condolence message said that the death has caused an irreparable loss to national politics, especially efforts to institutionalize democracy and peace.
In a statement, RJP Chairman Surya Bahadur Thapa said that Nepali politics has lost its guardian with the passing away of Koirala.
Nepal Rastriya Party has also paid its tribute to the departed soul while lauding the role Koirala played to strengthen democracy and establish peace in Nepal.
Goit saddened
Jaya Krishna Goit, a leader of Maoist Tarai outfit, said that he was saddened by the death of Koirala. In a statement, Goit said Koirala´s demise has caused an irreparable loss to Nepali politics.
