National hockey tourney after 13 years

KATHMANDU, Sept 20: National level hockey tournament resumed in Nepal after 13 years. National Hockey Tournament kicked off in Pokhara at the Pokhara Stadium on Tuesday. The last time National Hockey Tournament was held in Nepal was during 2055 BS in Bhairahawa.



In the curtain raiser, Central Region beat Western Region 2-1. Harbindar Singh and Santosh Thapa netted one goal each for the winning side. Milan Gurung pulled one back for the Western Region. [break]



In another match, Mid Western Region saw off Far-Western region 2-0. Salim Shrestha and Munna Siddiki netted one goal each for the winning side.



Earlier, Deepak Koirala, the president of the Western Regional Sports Development Committee inaugurated the tournament.



Altogether, six teams including five regional teams and a team of Nepal Army are participating in the tournament.



The tournament will be held on the league cum knockout basis. The winner and the runner-up of the event will bag a purse of Rs 50,000 and 30,000 respectively.
