KATHMANDU, Oct 8: Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) has decided to airlift Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) to resolve the fuel shortage problem faced by domestic airline companies. The national flag carrier will start bringing ATF from Kolkata from Thursday for itself and for the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) as well.

The management committee has taken a decision in this regard on Wednesday as it is important to serve air passengers during major festive season when many Nepalis travel to their homes outside the capital."The management committee has decided to use Boeing 757 to ferry ATF from Kolkata," said Ram Hari Sharma, spokesperson of the NAC, adding that they will be operating two flights daily for ferrying aviation fuel.

Boeing 757 has the capacity to carry 33 tons of ATF at a time.

The daily fuel demand of domestic airlines is 50,000 litres so half of the ATF brought from Kolkata will be provided to NOC. "We cannot cancel the flights at this time as the number of bookings is very high," said Sharma.

"NAC has decided to keep half of what it brings for itself and provide the other half to domestic airlines. We have decided to provide ATF only to domestic airlines so as to ensure that they can provide uninterrupted service to the passengers at this time of crisis," said Pradip Kumar Yadav, aviation fuel in-charge at NOC.

The government had formed a seven-member committee last Wednesday with Buddhi Sagar Lamichhane, joint secretary of Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA), as coordinator to recommend options to airlift ATF so that domestic airlines could continue providing service to passengers.
